I think this issue is VERY damned important...
...especially in our community...
I don't do this often, but it's time to be serious for a second.
There has been a report of drink spiking, occuring last weekend. This is the 4th instance in almost as many weeks, and I personally am aware of the situations, so this is not just a chain-notice. I know I may be sounding like a broken record to some, but for goodness sake, when you're out and about, keep an eye on your drinks, and on your friends drinks.
Simple behavior changes can help reduce the risk of your drink being tampered with:
a) Do not leave your drink alone for any reason, including going to the bathroom, going for a dance, talking to a friend, minding a table....
b) Drinking from a bottle? Keep the lid on, or keep your thumb in the top when its not attached to your gob.
c) Don't accept drinks from people you dont trust implicitly.
d) If you must take a drink from someone, go to the bar with them, and watch your drink being made. Do not allow them to handle the drink at any stage.
e) Do not drink anything you did not open yourself, see opened or see poured.
f) If you feel ill, or wrong in any way, tell someone. If you feel drugged, tell someone. If something isn't right... TELL SOMEONE.
g) If you see anyone messing with drinks, alert the security guards, bar staff, or club organisers, IMMEDIATELY.
If your drink has been spiked, your symptoms will vary depending on what's been slipped into your drink. The more common ones include:
- Feeling dizzy or faint
- Feeling ill or sleepy
- Feeling intoxicated even if you have only had a little alcohol to drink.
- Passing out
- Waking up feeling uncomfortable and disoriented, with memory blanks about the night before.
If you suspect your drink has been spiked, go to hospital/doctors as soon as you can
The sooner you get there, within 4-5 hours maximum
) the better the chance of getting a conclusive test result. Don't be embarrased, worried or ashamed. You've done nothing wrong, and no one is going to blame you for it.
And guys? Dont presume this is a female-only problem. You can get your drink spiked too.
Simple changes can make all the difference. If youre interested in getting drink spiking tests that you can carry around with you, drop me a line and I'll pass the info on to you.
Be sensible. Be aware. Be safe.
